Mayor Bloomberg Makes a Surprise Visit at Fresh Air Flicks Event
August 17, 2005 — The Voice Magazine
On a beautiful Thursday night under The Brooklyn Bridge, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg made a surprise appearance at the 6th Annual "Movies with a View" outdoor movie series, sponsored by The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy.
With Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, Mayor Bloomberg greeted the crowd of over 2,000 New Yorkers gathered to watch Tim Burton's Big Fish on a 2-story inflatable movie screen provided by Fresh Air Flicks. "This is what our waterfront should be," Bloomberg exclaimed, "all 570 miles we have in this city and we're working towards that."
2005 marked the second straight year the New York based Fresh Air Flicks has provided the screen, sound and projection for the movie series. Glen Sanders, President of Fresh Air Flicks spoke with the Mayor after his appearance. "When the Mayor of New York takes the time to stop by, it's proof positive that outdoor movies are great community events."
The week before the Mayor's appearance over 3,000 people turned out for the movie in Empire Fulton-Ferry State Park, shattering previous attendance records.
The increasing attendance and relaxed, community atmosphere of the outdoor movie series has made the event a natural political stop. In addition to Mayor Bloomberg, City Councilman David Yassky, Council Speaker and Mayoral Candidate Gifford Miller and Borough President Marty Markowitz turned out to greet the audience.
